Webinar Description: Wild rice (Manoomin in Anishinaabemowin or Psiη in Dakhótiyapi-Oceti Ŝakowiŋ) is a native wetland grass that is a dietary and spiritual staple for Native people throughout the Great Lakes region. Unfortunately, its distribution and abundance has declined over the past 100+ years, which has been attributed to land use change, climate change, contaminants, and other disturbances to shallow lakes and slow-flowing streams. In this webinar, we will introduce the biology and ecology of wild rice and the challenges it faces. We will also talk about an ongoing partnership between university researchers and tribes centered on wild rice and highlight the need for non-Native scientists to work respectfully with tribes in ways that honor Indigenous sovereignty and treaty rights.

Speakers: Dan Larkin and Cara Santelli (University of Minnesota) and William “Joe” Graveen (Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa)

Credits: 1.0 hours online, pending
