Tour Details: The containment lab tours highlight current MAISRC research, with over 20 active projects spanning both lab and fieldwork. Stretching over 10,000 square feet, the MAISRC containment lab is the only facility of its kind in the Midwest, supporting research on high-risk aquatic invasive species. The tour will include RNA interference studies targeting zebra mussel survival, hybrid watermilfoil herbicide trials to inform lake management, and efforts to propagate zebra mussels while using algae as a genetic biocontrol delivery system. Invasive carp research focuses on acoustic and carbon dioxide deterrents at locks and dams, as well as CRISPR-based genetic biocontrol using fathead minnows as surrogate hosts to accelerate research.
