Topic: Enhancing habitat and diversity in cattail dominated shorelines & the Phragmites Reporting Tool
When: Wednesday, May 4th from 2:30 - 4:00 PM
Webinar Description:
In Minnesota wetlands and nearshore lake ecosystems, two invasive plant species, hybrid (Typha × glauca) and narrowleaf (Typha angustifolia) cattail have expanded, altering environmental conditions and displacing other plant species. Invasive cattail acts as an ecosystem engineer by replacing diverse wetland and aquatic plant communities with a more homogenous environment dominated by tall, dense, difficult-to-penetrate cattail and its litter (dead cattail). Invasion of wetland and nearshore ecosystems by cattail reduces the diversity and abundance of other plant species, which can result in reduced fish abundance and diversity in cattail-dominated nearshore zones. This presentation will:
● Explain the invasion history of narrowleaf and hybrid cattail.
● Describe the effects of invasive cattail on water quality, plants, macroinvertebrates, and fishes.
● Provide potential solutions for cattail management.
Additionally, Julia Bohnen will present 10-15 minutes on the Phragmites Reporting Tool.
